  • Brearley non postable fountain pen, Karelian masur birch, stainless steel

    £90.00

A beautiful contemporary style high end pen, adorned with the finest quality polished 303 grade stainless steel. The barrel and cap are hand turned from an exquisite piece of Karelian masur birch. As with many fine pens, this pen is not designed to be used with the cap attached (i.e. the cap is non postable). This fountain pen uses bottled ink (ink reservior included) or a standard short cartridge (sold separately).

Harry Brearley was an English metallurgist, credited with the invention of "rustless steel". Based in Sheffield, his invention brought affordable cutlery to the masses, and saw an expansion of the city’s traditional cutlery trade.

Karelian Masur Birch is from Karelia, the border region between Russia and Eastern Finland. Trunks with good grains are relatively rare and are much sought after. The typical appearance in the form of brown veins is unique and is found in no other burl. The birch also plays a major role in the mythology and customs of all the Nordic and Scandinavian peoples: it was dedicated to the goddess Freya. The birch was also thought to be a "tree of protection" and a "tree of light," where superstition held that it would attract lightning.
