Yew is an evergreen conifer native to the UK, mainland Europe and North Africa. Yew trees can reach 400 to 600 years of age. There are 10 yew trees in Britain believed to predate the 10th century. Yew trees have long been associated with churchyards and there are at least 500 churchyards in England, which contain yew trees older than the building itself. The leaves and seeds of the tree are notoriously lethal if eaten, however, the tree contains some very useful chemicals. The needles are converted into the chemotherapy drugs proven to be effective in combating lung and prostate cancer and advanced cases of breast cancer.
